{"id":92,"date":"2011-10-31T21:45:04","date_gmt":"2011-11-01T04:45:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/?p=92"},"modified":"2012-10-06T08:29:08","modified_gmt":"2012-10-06T15:29:08","slug":"following-in-my-foodstops-the-lincoln-highway-in-ohio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/?p=92","title":{"rendered":"Following in My Foodstops: the Lincoln Highway in Ohio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I attended a convention in Massillon\u2013always a pleasure, since the town, laden with wonderful architecture, sits smack on the Lincoln Highway and I usually manage to drive at least some of this wonderful road there and back. \u00a0 Having grown up just off the Lincoln Highway in Indiana between LaPorte and South Bend, where the main drags are\u2013ahem\u2013called \u201cLincolnway,\u201d driving old highways is simply in my blood.\u00a0 (More on Indiana\u2019s stretch, which has recently been designated a state scenic byway, another day.)\u00a0 In recent years, going to this particular convention has given me a good excuse to explore thoroughly our neighboring state\u2019s stretch of this historic road.<\/p>\n<p>Van Wert is the first town of consequence, if you are following the Lincoln Highway eastward from Indiana.\u00a0 A county seat, it boasts an over-the-top nineteenth century courthouse and other wonderful downtown delights.\u00a0 In the next block from the courthouse is Balyeat\u2019s\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/consumer.discoverohio.com\/searchdetails.aspx?detail=56172\">Balyeats Coffee Shop<\/a> ).\u00a0 It has an incredible oversized neon sign decades old offering \u201cyoung fried chicken,\u201d which borders on the horrifying today, but is so darn cool!\u00a0 In truth we did not stop there on the way eastward, but did catch it on the way back, shortly before its closing on Sunday night.\u00a0 They\u2019d had a big day and were out of a lot of food, but what they served\u2013basic American homecooking fare\u2013certainly made me want to go back another time.\u00a0 Besides, did I mention how cool the sign is?\u00a0 Balyeat\u2019s atmosphere and location right across from that courthouse is the kind of place where you can imagine all the town\u2019s moving and shaking has been going on\u2013well, since 1924.<\/p>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"cThumbImg\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/consumer.discoverohio.com\/graphics\/listings\/photos\/6220_thumb_4272007131844.jpg\" alt=\"Historic Balyeat's Coffee Shop\" \/><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"line-height: 24px; font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0Today I am writing primarily of food stops, although I must say the Lincoln Highway in Ohio is a joy to travel, with sweeping rural landscapes and intermittent hamlets and towns that the current US30 ignores, like Upper Sandusky and Bucyrus.\u00a0 But perhaps my favorite stop on the road to Massillon is Wooster.<\/span><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Wayne County courthouse in Wooster is the only one I have seen in all my travels that is part of a city block, not set apart.\u00a0 (The Steuben County courthouse in Angola,\u00a0 Indiana sits in a corner of the square, but it is still a separate building.)\u00a0 \u00a0 This\u00a0amazing Second Empire monument to excess was built 1877-79. \u00a0 My jaw still drops.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 12px; color: #000000; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; line-height: 18px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_0759.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-139\" title=\"IMG_0759\" src=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_0759-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_0759-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_0759-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/IMG_0759.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This intersection lies north of a sort of square on which is located one of the most charming places to plot a revolution I\u2019ve ever encountered.\u00a0 (And from its window one can gaze at the courthouse.)\u00a0 The Tulipan Hungarian Pastry &amp; Coffee Shop is likely as close to Budapest as I\u2019ll ever get.\u00a0 The pastries and Hungarian delicacies inspire rapturous praise.\u00a0 I have tasted nothing\u00a0 ordinary here, let alone bad.\u00a0 While the selections of pastries are vast, Tulipan also offers a menu of entrees that includes delicious open-face sandwiches and rolled omelets, something I had not ever seen before.\u00a0 Light, savory, and deceptively filling, I recommend them all. \u00a0 We stopped there for some pastry (it\u2019s only 20-odd miles from Massillon) and kept to our plan of stopping there for lunch on the way home.\u00a0 The only problem is that it has such a wonderful feel about it that it is difficult to leave.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Massillon, our destination and site of an annual classic film convention in the fall, is a wonderfully historic town, on a river and formerly on a canal, with all the above-ground archaeology associated with such a past.\u00a0 I had always passed and looked longingly at this interesting little drive-in on the west side of town, but this time finally stopped.\u00a0 It was a delightful surprise to discover it offered not only an array of ice cream treats, but a sizable food menu that included a variety of tasty sandwiches and salads.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"-webkit-user-select: none; cursor: -webkit-zoom-in;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.agilitynut.com\/07\/7\/mtwistee2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"882\" height=\"641\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A little research after my return home revealed that there are a number of these buildings around the country, with several in Ohio. \u00a0 (Read about them here <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agilitynut.com\/food\/twistee.html\">Twistee Treat<\/a>).\u00a0 Ironically, I had happened to spot one in Niagara Falls earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, so many wonders on Ohio\u2019s Lincoln Highway!\u00a0 The return trip included that stop back in Wooster at Tulipan\u2013and also a stolen hour at an amazing bookstore half a block away called Books in Stock\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.booksinstock.net\/\">Books In Stock: Used, Rare and Antique Books<\/a>) that is a dangerous place (you will never get away!) \u00a0 But there is one more food stop I must mention.<\/p>\n<p>The stretch of the old highway between Wooster and Mansfield is especially beautiful.\u00a0 Just east of Mansfield is the tiny village of Mifflin.\u00a0 Its main business is the Mifflin Lakes Trading Post, which is one of the few places you may hear someone order 3 dozen nightcrawlers and two scoops of chocolate ice cream.\u00a0 The storekeeper does wash thoroughly between orders.\u00a0 This place has a huge supply of every sort of bait and lure you could possibly imagine, along with hunting gear I\u2019ve never dreamed of\u2013and ice cream.\u00a0 Good ice cream, never mind the crickets.<\/p>\n<p>Old highways, as I said, are in my blood, and the Lincoln Highway never stops calling me.\u00a0 There is a stretch of the road in Ohio I\u2019ve not yet seen, from Massillon to East Liverpool (home of all that wonderful pottery).\u00a0 I\u2019m going back later this month.\u00a0 You can bet there will be a stop at Tulipan!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I attended a convention in Massillon\u2013always a pleasure, since the town, laden with wonderful architecture, sits smack on the Lincoln Highway and I usually manage to drive at least some of this wonderful road there and back. \u00a0 Having &hellip;
