the Confectionery Trail: A Movable Christmastime Feast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new tradition began a year ago.\u00a0 It happened to be on my mother\u2019s birthday, which is why this trip is now marked to become an annual event though it was just a coincidence the first time.\u00a0 Mom is gone now, but there is much of her in me.\u00a0 She loved chocolate, and, possibly to my regret, instilled that passion in me right enough\u2013oh yes, indeed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/gshimpf.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-218\" alt=\"gshimpf\" src=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/gshimpf.jpg\" width=\"840\" height=\"627\" srcset=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/gshimpf.jpg 840w, http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/gshimpf-300x223.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Having visited Schimpff&#8217;s Confectionery in Jeffersonville, Indiana a few times more or less on business, we made a plan to go there just for fun a little before Christmas last year.\u00a0 Located at 347 Spring Street, Schimpff\u2019s is a family-owned candy store, soda fountain, and lunch counter over 120 years old. \u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.schimpffs.com\/\">www.schimpffs.com<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/blueschmpff.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-219\" alt=\"blueschmpff\" src=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/blueschmpff.jpg\" width=\"778\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/blueschmpff.jpg 778w, http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/blueschmpff-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 778px) 100vw, 778px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Decorated for Christmas, the place is a fantasy land filled with jars and glass cases of Schimpff&#8217;s yummy candy. \u00a0Ooooh!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/schimpffinside.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-220\" alt=\"schimpffinside\" src=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/schimpffinside.jpg\" width=\"838\" height=\"629\" srcset=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/schimpffinside.jpg 838w, http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/schimpffinside-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can watch them making it in the adjoining space, where that day they were rolling out sheets of glassy hot cinnamon candy on its way to becoming their famous cinnamon Red Hots (they are)!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/schiminside21.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-227\" alt=\"schiminside2\" src=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/schiminside21.jpg\" width=\"838\" height=\"629\" srcset=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/schiminside21.jpg 838w, http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/schiminside21-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the back is a fascinating\u2013and oh so nostalgic!\u2013little candy museum that features containers, advertisements, and candy-making equipment from all over the country.<\/p>\n<p>Remember these?\u00a0 They were still around when I was very young.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/sdisplay.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-225\" alt=\"sdisplay\" src=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/sdisplay-1024x389.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"243\" http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/sdisplay.jpg 1125w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>Choosing from among all the wonderful candies was a lot of work, so we decided to have a light lunch in the back, where there is an old-fashioned soda fountain and some tables and booths. \u00a0 Heavenly days, they had phosphates and venerable lunch counter fare, so I ordered an egg salad sandwich and a chocolate phosphate, just as I used to do when I had lunch with my Mommy and Granny at Kresge&#8217;s in downtown South Bend.\u00a0 As I sat bathed in nostalgia I thought what an appropriate place to be.\u00a0 It was my mother\u2019s birthday, and she would\u2019ve loved this place (and probably would have ordered the same thing.)\u00a0 Not only for the childhood memories; she and I used to wander around the state quite a bit and sought out such places\u2013not for us the boring fast food.\u00a0 The tear that fell was one of joy and a sense of her presence.<\/p>\n<p>The day was chilly but sunny, just right for a stroll down historic Spring Street with its many interesting shops.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/springst.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-224\" alt=\"springst\" src=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/springst.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/springst.jpg 614w, http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/springst-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t knit or sew, but I have many friends who no doubt would love the yarn shop named Grinny Possum. <a href=\"http:\/\/grinnypossum.com\">http:\/\/grinnypossum.com<\/a>\/<\/p>\n<p>We did wander around Horner Novelty, rather a museum in itself.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hornernovelty.com\/\">Horner Novelty &#8211; The Party Planner&#8217;s Paradise<\/a>\u00a0 (I thought better of sharing the photo of me in a flamingo hat.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/hornernovelty.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-222\" alt=\"hornernovelty\" src=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/hornernovelty.jpg\" width=\"838\" height=\"629\" sizes=\"(max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We thought of popping back into Schimpff\u2019s for a chocolate soda\u2013tempting!\u2013but decided instead to stop in Columbus on the way back to Indianapolis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/zkos.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-221\" alt=\"zkos\" src=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/zkos.jpg\" width=\"838\" height=\"629\" srcset=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/zkos.jpg 838w, http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/zkos-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Why?\u00a0 To go to Zaharako\u2019s, one of the most wonderful historic restorations I have ever seen.\u00a0 This confectionery, also into its second century, is itself a museum,with an additional room full of beautiful soda fountains and restored mechanical musical devices such as orchestrions and juke box pianos.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zaharakos.com\/\">Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/zkosxmas1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-228\" alt=\"zkosxmas\" src=\"http:\/\/gloryjune.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/zkosxmas1.jpg\" width=\"840\" height=\"627\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When we entered Zaharako\u2019s, the Welte Orchestrion, which is original to the establishment, was playing a robust and joyful medley of Christmas carols.\u00a0 It made me want to dance (oh wait, maybe I did)! \u00a0 Oh, why not, we indulged in a sundae and drank in the festive atmosphere, not in any hurry to leave.\u00a0 A slow day of peace and joy and wonder in these fast times.<\/p>\n<p>And that is why we will be doing it again this year.\u00a0 Happy Birthday, Mom.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new
